The Farmhouse38 Blog was created to complement our existing website, Farmhouse38.com. Together, they document the transformation of a little, 100-year-old, previously abandoned house, into our vision of a quaint farmhouse in the city.
My husband is originally from Texas, and though I was born and raised in Los Angeles, we both dream of one day having a real, country farm. For the time being, his career in television post-production keeps us tethered to Southern California, so we figured we’d get as farmy as we could in this crazy place. Keep up with our blog for stories about our renovation dramedies and our ‘barnyard’ full of animals, as well as for farm style tips and tutorials. We know this little hovel doesn’t even come close to the real thing and our hats are off to all the actual farmers out there who are going to have a pretty good laugh at our expense. We just want to show all our fellow, reluctant city-dwellers that you can be a little countrified no matter where you might live.

I’m hooked already! Looking forward to your next post. Came over from Bobbie at Montana.

So glad you can have animals. My city is very strict on that so, moving in 2013 to the upper peninsula near some of my family. Really want chickens if possible.
You know what? Our town is pretty strict, too, but we have the best neighbors (all of whom I ply with eggs and whatever other goodies I test-drive in the kitchen), and we go to very great lengths to ensure that our animals aren’t bothering anyone.
Hooray! I’m so happy to have found you and your utterly delightful blog! I am a happy chicken-loving, organic rancher at-heart, trapped in the body and life of a big city suburbanite – so I feel right at home at your blog! While I may be way up north (brrr!) I still grow lots of food on our backyard plot and plan on doing backyard beekeeping and while I want chickens, I need to meet some others who currently keep chickens up here in Zone 3 because how do you care for them when it’s 40-below and there’s a foot of snow on the ground? Other than that, we’re in the same kind of lifestyle
Happy hugs from a new fan!
Cheers, Gina
Hi, Gina! Welcome! If you don’t already follow them–check out Fresh Eggs Daily–I get practically all my chicken info from them. They really know what they are doing, and the writers all have snow chickens. (Tell them Farmhouse38 says hi!) This article, in particular, may be helpful: http://fresh-eggs-daily.blogspot.com/2012/10/cold-weather-prep-winterizing-your-flock.html
40 below?!!! Where the heck are you?! That being said, I know people do chickens in that kind of climate: there are extra precautions you’ve got to take, but chickens are pretty adaptable, especially when there’s a good little flock of them to huddle together at night!
This reminds me of what my mother said to me when I was working in a big city…”you can take the girl out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the girl!”
Since 2000, I am back in the country on a 1/2 acre and blog about the love/hate relationship between me and Mother Nature. Drop by!
