Egg Count

Look at my cute little egg-helper!  My friends’ adorable son, Lane, was quite taken with the egg harvest….so far, we’ve got eight, all from Millie….but, big news–both Gertie and Eloise started doing the ‘egg squat’ this week, so we should be getting more any day now!

This is the proper way to obtain eggs for consumption. Happy chickens make happy, healthy eggs! Until our situation changes, we’re currently doing without. Those blue eyes…what a little heart-breaker.

What a beautiful little dude – and what pretty eggs, too! Please to explain this ‘egg squat.’ I’ve got a 22-week-old who has yet to begin laying, and it’s KILLING me. I keep imagining signs that the dear is going to lay something soon… but nothing, nada, zip so far.

So the ‘squat’ is something they do when they have reached sexual maturity–it’s really the position they take for the rooster to mount them (I guess), but they ‘assume the position’ also when you approach them or go to pet them. They just suddenly drop and sort of spread their wings. It’s weird. But, hey, whatever works!

Hahaha! How… AWKWARD. Like, “Hey, lady, I don’t want ANY of that business. I just wanted to pet you!” I’ll keep my eyes peeled – we have yet to notice this particular phenomenon. 🙂
